The most prominent structure in Washington, DC, the Washington Monument is located at the center of The National Mall, situated between The Capitol and The Lincoln Memorial. At 555 feet, the world’s tallest stone structure honors the nation’s founding father — George Washington.
The observation deck of the Washington Monument allows a bird’s eye view of the Nation’s Capital (with visibility of up to 40 miles in all directions). Tickets are required for visitors over the age of 2. Tickets are free if you get them the same day at the Washington Monument Lodge located on 15th Street. Tickets are first-come, first-served and are distributed at 8:30am every morning. If you have a family reunion group, it may be beneficial to pay a fee for advanced reservations. The reservation fee per ticket is $1.50 + shipping and handling ($2.85 for 1-9 tickets, $4.65 for 10 or more).
If you’re not on a tour bus, parking around the Washington Monument is scare. Metered street parking is available and limited to 2 hours. Paid parking garages can be found north of the monument but be prepared to walk. Public transit is highly recommended, either by Metrorail or Metrobus.
All visitors are subjected to security screening. Weapons, strollers, and bulky items are prohibited. Wheelchairs are permitted. Wheelchair rental is not available however, all visitors will board an elevator in order to reach to the top of the observation deck and museum. Tours are not timed and are completely at your leisure.
